`top` doesnt display real amount of RAM?

`top` doesnt display real amount of RAM?
i have 2 gigs of ram in 2 of my machines at work. when running `top` it only displays 975K (something really close to that).
any idea why? how can i make it display everything?

well, it appears that i need to set up the kernel to support more memory. i thought 4 gigs was supported with a standard install.
