I just tried the new release of Knoppix Linux
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html and I have to say I am blown away.
I was just messing around and I decided to give it a try on my wife's machine. I popped in the 3.2 CD rebooted and went back to what I was doing at my computer. About 3 minutes later I turned around and there was KDE 3.1 just sitting there waiting to be used! It booted up almost as fast as a standard Linux installation on the HDD. It hadn't asked me any questions, made me make any decisions, and it just booted directly into KDE. I couldn't believe it! From my exprerience with Linux over the last 5 years I knew if an install went that flawlessly, something had to be screwed up, but everything was working!!
Sound (SBLive! Value): detected and working correctly immediately
Video (Voodoo Banshee): defaults to 1024x768, working immediatly.
Network (SMC 1121): Defaults to DHCP but you can change it through a Knoppix config app. Working immediatly
Devices (MS USB Mouse, USB Keyboard, CDROM): All detected and working immediatly
Apps: Loads! Just about every popular open source app was installed and working correctly (that I had time to try)
Loading time is a little long due to everything having to be loaded off the CD but I didn't find anything glaringly wrong! I will post more as I have time to test/play with it.
