Thumbs down I'm Lost, Can't Even Find The Compiler

I downloaded the J2SE 1.4.1 devolpment kit from java.sun.com After installing, it gives me this:

Maybe I'm a blind moron, but I don't see anything remotely resembling a compiler or "development kit". If someone could tell me what I need to download in order to be able to do anything, I'd appreciate it.

Well, for one thing, thats the JR2 runtime enviroment your looking at, not the standard toolkit. Try checking temp folders for it, or run a search for it.

if you are looking for an IDE, you could d/l Sun One Studio. If you are just looking for the compiler, then, not sure.

your compiler is 'javac' (do a search, you'll find it). it is a commandline tool. the sun development kit is not an ide, it is the compiler and standard libraries.

No luck for "javac"...similiar files are "java.exe" and "javaw.exe", but they don't do anything. I'll try downloading Sun One Studio, and get back to ya if I have problems with it (which I'm sure I will).

Thanks for the help btw

like rie said you have the jre there not the sdk, typically the sdk will be @ c:\j2sdk1.4.1 or similar

to get the sdk go over to java.sun.com --> downloads and grab the sdk from there.

once you've got it "javac" will compile your programs a "java" will run them, both are run from the command line, obviously

Cool

You downloaded the j2re, that does not have the compiler with it, you can get a compiler from http://www.jikes.org if you want something fast, or you can get a compiler from http://java.sun.com if you want the sun microsystems one, to get the compiler you have to download the J2SDK not the J2RE. Have fun :-)

You need to download and install the SDK (Standard Development Kit) then to be able to actually use the compiler efficently you need to add the bin folder in the java SDK directory to your Path Enviromental Variable (i.e. C:\j2sdk1.4.9\bin) that will let you just type in javac and the file name in a command prompt to compile your app. i had to do the same thing recently in Windows XP.... so if you need anymore help you can get my contact info from my profile
