A java frame trick

simply put, I'd like to know how to replicate the type of effect seen in this picture with java, preferably something built into it

that effect being a text field that the user can click to open a selection of things, one of which he can then select.

any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated, I apologize for the abruptness of this, but I've become frustrated by several of my failed attempts by now.
