Gonna give Java a shot, any advice?

I dabble mostly in C/C++ and never really could get into it, so a buddy of mine suggested I give Java a whirl and then go back to C/C++ later. All I've done so far was pick up a book on it, "Learning Java 2nd edition" by O'Reilly publishing.
Just wondering if any folks have some helpful advice, other literature suggestions, findings or comments for a newbie.
Thanks!

Hi everyone,

Here read the below thread

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread8386.html

I have done C/C++ for many years i seriously i tell you sometimes creating something like a print preview can take you an extremely long time in C/C++ but not in java.

My advice start with awt first and then go to swing. Don't jump to swing immediately
as it may be difficult to cope. Another thing if you need a good manual you can find a lot of free books on the internet(google it) instead of buying a book.

I hope this helps you and also let me know how you like my article at daniweb

Without open source software there would be no windows

Yours Sincerely

Valmont was in a similar situtation, so I made this post.

I'm not very good at the GUI stuff, but I do a fair amount of J2EE-style programming, so anything that doesn't involve AWT or Swing I have a fair shot at giving you some help should you want it.

Thanks ya'll! I have two big tests one week after another so it might be a while before I can really jump into this. 'Course I'll probably sneak some peeks into the book whenever brain rot kicks in:-P
