Java refreshers needed, apply within

hey all

i'm just wondering if anyone has some good suggezxtive readign material for a former j2EE programmer that's tryign to quickly brush off the cobwebs. Be it in paper or online form, I'm looking for it all. Anythign with developing J2EE on a linux platform or with Oracle woudl be a bonus.

also for all of those that are in the know, what the heck is a strut, and what is it useful for? (Yes i've done some reading, and I'm thinking I must be more dense then I though)

Thanks for all that read this thread, have a good one

When you say J2EE, which technologies in particular are you referring too? I ask the question because the spec actually includes JSP, Servlets, JMS, EJB and probably other things I'm leaving out. People tend to mean different things when they talk about J2EE apps. For example, a number of people I know equate it to EJB stuff only.

For Oracle related info, try Oracle Technology Network . There are java-related articles, forums, and downloads.

Struts is an application development framework that conforms to the Model View Controller architecture. It uses custom tags, a validation framework, global exception handling, etc. So, if you're writing apps and you want a ready made framework, it may or may not be to your liking. I can't say that I've done much with it. I only know this much because I've come across it in reading, most recently in the book "Head First Servlets and JSP".

Struts . . . been meaning to get into them. They're basically a framework to enforce MVC architecture. They're a technology on top of the usual J2EE stuff.

As for J2EE, I really enjoyed the book SCWCD Exam Study Kit by Hanumant Deshmukh and Jignesh Malavia . . . it was well written and easy to understand.

Slightly off topic. Belisarius, have you taken the exam yet? I'm probably at least a month to 6 weeks away. The Head First book just came out recently and covers the new version of the exam. I'm not sure how much is really different, though.

well to answer soem of the Q's;

the place that i'm interviewing for just stated struts and xml, i'm assuming other basic J2EE stuff as well like servlets and EJB's.

They're hosting the app they're workign on a linux system. Havent really done java on linux, but cant really see it being an issue.

Same with having JDBC playign nice with Oracle, probably the same as dealing with other DB's

I'm mostly worried about the J2EE section, I havent dont Java in over a year and I"m rusty as heck. Hence why i'm looking for refreshers or readign material, which i'll be goign to chapters to check out the suggestions mentioned.

I took the test, but I signed up for the 1.4 test and didn't quite realize that it was going to be so different from the standard test. The book I mentioned was for the older test, and had I taken that one I'm confident I would have passed (I missed passing by 6 points). As it were, I missed quite a few questions on the new "Expression Language", as well as the questions involving the Standard Tag Libraries, which I don't believe are covered on the old test.

There is a lot of review material out there for the older test, but almost nothing for the newer one (I haven't seen the Head First book yet). Be careful of it.
