I downloaded and installed the Java2 SDK, what and where are the development tools?

Yep, I use netbeans myself, although it's a bit of a resource hog. Eclipse is the other popular open-source IDE.

netbeans was easier to get the jsp stuff happening for me .. i briefly tried eclipse.

if my company purchases websphere, then it looks like i'll be developing in eclipse since it supports websphere components.

hmm i have downloaded and installed netbeans .. but i would love a simple text editor with syntax highlighting and stuff .. and a simple compile & run command .. netbeans offers a bit too much for my inexperience

i have downloaded and installed jedit .. have tried it yet .. just had a look .. did anyone use it ? what did they think of it ? do i need to download some extra plugins for jedit ?

btw i am using it on win98se

I've used TextPad before, and it's basically WordPad with syntax highlighting. Of course, you could always grab Emacs or my personal favorite, XEmacs.

A friend of mine uses BlueJ and likes it. It's designed to teach java and is therefore a simpler IDE. I tend to use a slightly out of date version of Sun ONE Studio (formerly Forte) which is based on the ever-popular netbeans.
