servlet programming

ok.. im learning java servlet progamming with mySQL, and i was wondering if anyone knew if there was some kind method that detects button pushing, like the isset command in PHP

i am trying to do an 'insert into a database' form for a blog, and if i do what im thinking of doing right now, which is sticking the code to throw it into the db right after the html code, i will end up with a lot of wasted stuff.....

re: inset

is it possible to add a submit or update button? the servlet programming that i've done i've used a submit button with an action on the form in HTML

<form action="servlets/submit.java">
<!-- your form goes here -->
<input type="submit" value="submit">
</form>

the above code executes the servlet when the submit button is pressed

is that anything close to what you were asking?
