My CSS is doing strange things (not a bug)

I'm assembling a loop of blog entries inside a

<div class="entry"></div>

which shows fine, but I'm trying to then loop a div around the very first entry doing only 3 things - border formatting CSS.

Besides the PHP, the HTML looks to be in order but I can't understand why I'm getting way bigger text. The basic jist of what I want to achieve is

<div class="entry">
 <div class="newest">
 I am entry number one
 </div>

Post number 2

Post number 3

... etc ...

</div>

It would be great if somebody could shed some light on the problem so I can get this page FINALLY finished version V1.0a

OH and it's not possible to just have a copy of 'entry' except with the extra 'newest' attributes added, as the css file is friggin HUGE enough with the comprehensive <div class="entry"> stuff already without duplicating the info.

Preferrably help in debugging my current solution rather then a new technique (unless it is thoroughly explained )

i think you have too much going on. move the posts out to a seperate HTML page and only add CSS to format the posts how you want.

then you will know exactly how it is without all the other CSS affecting it. once you do have that, then bring it back into your page and it will be pretty obvious if the cause of this weirdness is other parts of your CSS.

i think it will be a more approachable problem at that point. as of right now, i'm confused at your description and there is too much CSS to make a quick suggestion.

Hey thx sde 4 reply (yet again...you'd think you'd run the place...)

The page I've got there is basically the same as my index.php (well, page.php is nested in index.php) except I've tried an IF statment with a $counter to make the first entry have a border.

It's all very complicated and impossible to explain without going on for hours, but I'll have another look at my loop and HTML later after work.
