web hosting suggestions?
Hey guys,
I've been looking into and researching some various companies that offer web hosting. I've got a couple that I'm seriously looking at, but was wondering if you guys had any companies that you'd suggest.
I'm mainly looking for some space todo some web design for a few personal sites, maybe a little self employed web design, and also for teaching myself / practising languages and stuff.
I know there are a bunch of features and stuff for various servers, but to help you get an idea of what to suggest, here's what's important to me:
-decent price, of course
-PHP, Perl, Python (in that order of importance)
-MySQL database abilities
-more than 1 FTP account
-high or unmetered bandwidth; I don't except a tonne of traffic but I'd really rather not worry about it. This point can be sacrificed if need be.
-possibly some ASP.NET stuff a year or so down the road
Any ideas?
dazz.

SDE, the guy that owns and operates Code Newbie also runs his own hosting company called Portal360. I've been hosted through him for almost 2 years now, and have absolutely zero complaints. The guy fixes some damn tastey carne asada too
The cheapest package that offers more than 1 FTP account is the "Personal" package at $8.95/mo. - 300mb Disk Space
- 10GB Bandwidth
- Room for 3 domains
- Unlimited Subdomains
- Unlimited MySQL DB's
- Unlimited FTP accounts
- Unlimited E-mail accounts
- PHP
- CGI
- Webalizer Stats
- Powerful Control Panel
I've never had a problem with service. Any time I've submitted a trouble ticket, I've received a response in hours, not days. When I need a library compiled into PHP, he takes care of it. He's also pretty damn good with security.
A counter-strike server his clan once owned couldn't even be detected by McAfee's most powerful programs.
I won't be changing hosts anytime soon

I use Surpass Hosting for a dedicated server right now. They actually just upgraded the bandwidth they offer, multiplied it by 4 I think. http://www.surpasshosting.com . They have excellent support, and a great help forum.
They are my favorite host.
I use Host Gator for reseller hosting for my work stuff, they have good support options available (email, chat, phone). http://www.hostgator.com

why the different companies DewKnight?
Hey DewKnight, are there any speciic reasons why you're doing reselling with Host Gator but have a [dedicated] server with Surpass Hosting? Is one reselling account superior to the other, or was it just more of a chronological order of how things went along for you? Reselling part-time is something I'm seriously considering right now.

Surpass has always been my favorite host. I have hosted with them for I think 2 years now, went from shared to reseller to dedicated. I use them for all of my personal hosting.
At my work, we used to use homepageuniverse for hosting (plesk servers.. I couldn't stand plesk), so we decided to switch. My boss liked the Surpass plans, but we decided to go with host gator there because of the phone and chat support (Most of our issues that our users have are small things that can be solved just in a chat, or small questions). I like both hosts quite a bit.. I would recommend both of them.. But I still prefer Surpass (Got quite a few friends there)

reseller
Thanks for all the responses guys. Dew Knight, if I have more ?s about Surpass I'll let you know; I'm seriously considering them.
Edit to my original post: The focus of the webserver has now shifted to reselling, preferrably where the host stays invisible
Oh, a related question to any current/former resellers out there: If you have packages that cost slightly more than the/another original host, what's the advantage of a customer going w/you instead of signing themselves up with some host like you have (except with a "basic" account, not a reseller)? Do you depend on them taking the easy or ignorant route with you and/or offer web maintenance services with your hosting and/or anything else?
Thanks again.

I know that people can always go elsewhere for cheaper hosts. But I also know that there are people who don't want to have to manage everything about their site, or want a more personal service. Those are the type of people that I host. Sure I can get random signups, but most of mine are me going out and talking to people, catering to their needs. If they want cheap hosting, they can pick whoever they want.
And I'll be happy to answer any questions you have about Surpass (or Host Gator). I'm leaving for Texas tomorrow morning... so if your questions don't get answered here, just post them on the Surpass forums, many people will be glad to help.
