check if previous history exists

is there anyway to detect if the history object can go back() before you actually go?

is there anyway to detect which item of the history array you are currently on?

i only need to tell when i am on the history[0] so i can dynamically create a mock back/forward navigation. i need the back button to be a different image if there is no more backing up to do.

sure, i was trying to avoid server-side though since it is for a flash module.

ok .. the details are that we are embedding a flash module into a web site for navigation. it will reload with every page.

we only need to get the total length of the history ( history.length works fine ) and we need to know when there is no history left ( so we can display a grayed out back button )
