resizing images in Gimp

i am able to resize images...kinda, but when i pick say on a 78x78 image to resize to 50x50, it resizes the width to 50 and not the height. What am i missing that i cant resize and image to the specs i want. BTW, if you cant tell i am not a graphic type coder by any means

is there something that says "constrant proportions"?

Make sure the "8" mark next to the razio X:, Y: is an eight figure, and reads 1.000 in both X and Y, then the scale will be evenly, no matter how you set the size on either height or width.
