School District Fails Network Security

Rachel Metz, a 22-year-old cub reporter for the Palo Alto Weekly newspaper in Palo Alto, California, discovered an embarrassing glitch in the local school district's computer system: Its entire network was open for the world to see, and nobody knew it.

Metz, armed with a laptop, stumbled upon the gaping network security hole just by standing outside of Palo Alto High School, which sits across the street to the entrance of Stanford University.

On "Tech Live" Sunday, see how easy it was for Metz to break into the school's network, and what the district did about its problem.

Metz had found an all-access electronic pass to the school's most sensitive student records, thanks to a wireless network the school had installed with virtually no security. The most personal student files weren't even password-protected.
