Will hackers attack 6,000 Web sites in 6 hours on July 6?

The government and private technology experts warned Wednesday that hackers plan to attack thousands of Web sites Sunday in a loosely coordinated "contest" that could disrupt Internet traffic.

Organizers established a Web site, defacers-challenge.com, listing in broken English the rules for hackers who might participate. The Web site appeared to operate out of California and cautioned to "deface its crime" -- an apparent acknowledgment that vandalizing Internet pages is illegal.

I hope my several sites aren't on the list, but my machine gets attacked almost daily. Luckily, only two people in the last year have made it through, both due to my mistake in not reconfiguring my default FTP settings (which were fixed as soon as I noticed the problem).

But no one is hackproof, myself included. The warning for this Sunday may be pointless (since crackers operate 7 days a week, anyway), but back up your data just in case.
