Would like some info on "tuples" for python.

How exactly do they function? From what I understand they are strings that can't be changed (imutble) but references to it can be. Did I get it mixed up? Do I have the idea completely scrambled or is it something else? I would appreciate any answer that doesn't fall under the category of a flame. Thanx in advance.
