how come i dont hear much about perl

how come i dont hear much about perl? i started to do some last night. and i am liking it, but is it worth my time?

is it outdated, or has a better lag that is similar to it come along? also, what is perl most used for, and what are it's other uses?

any more info on perl you can give, would be a help

i think perl is still great for coding on a system, but you probably don't hear much about it anymore because php blew perl/cgi out of the water for server-side web development.

much less code, uses less resources, and easier to learn.

that's how i understand it anyway.

I agree with sde. I've been coding Perl since 1995. It was the first programming language I learned and with time I got to be pretty good at it. But once I learned PHP a year ago I realized Perl is about to become obsolete (for web use, anyway). I now code almost exclusively in PHP.

Perl is still an excellent choice for scripting that is not Web-based, such as local scripts, cron jobs, rotating logs, etc. But for any script that is to be accessed via a Web browser, PHP is clearly a better choice.
