Accessing the Windows desktop remotely

I thought it was time for a new thread in the 'Windows' forum, I'm getting tired of looking at the other one (yeah you know what I'm talking about). Anyway I need some input on something.

I've got an idea to have an XP / W2K machine on my network that I can keep as a headless machine and just access it remotely from another room; I need to be able to utilize it more or less exactly as I would a regular Windows box, just be able to run 4 or 5 applications on that machine (no gaming, obviously) from my local desktop. IIRC there is a method for doing such a thing, I'm not all familiar with RPC or remote access on Windows, so if anyone has done this or has run across this prior, please provide any input you can...

TIA
