like rie said you have the jre there not the sdk, typically the sdk will be @ c:\j2sdk1.4.1 or similar

to get the sdk go over to java.sun.com --> downloads and grab the sdk from there.

once you've got it "javac" will compile your programs a "java" will run them, both are run from the command line, obviously
