For those who are interested:

I recently bought a copy of Ivor Horton's Beginning Visual C++ 6. Within it is a copy of Visual C++ 6.0 Introductory Edition. The only difference I have found between the Intro and full version of Visual C++ is that you don't get some programs like Spy. All the debugging is still possible as far as I can tell, of course I am a newbie and could be missing something. With that said the book cost me about 70 (US) and is available in Barnes & Nobles and the like. Be warned that they do sell one without the program for $50 (US). I found that so far all the ones with the program come in a box, but that may change.
