thanks. the problem is definately with mysql alone.. and on redhat, it works better if you install php and mysql alone.
mysql doesn't have to work in a web based environment, so it should at least work by itself.. i mean mysql server and mysql client... but the mysql client won't even connect to the server when it says it is running.
very strange indeed. if the box were at my house, i'd just re-install redhat... or even better, .. debian.
