Repeated Windows message

I was fixing a laptop tonight and have come across something (hopefully simple) that I can't get rid of.
The laptop is about 3 years old with WinXP Home. It wouldn't boot up into Windows because of an unbootable disk something or other, basically it couldn't access the boot up files on the harddrive because it had errors or something. I booted from the WinXP disk, entered the recovery console, and ran chkdsk /r. After that, I was going to run fixboot but decided to reboot first to check if it was working now. Rebooted into WinXP fine and was all usable except that the error "Windows has recovered from a serious error" comes up. I turned off error reporting but it still gives notice of the error (as expected) however when you click "Close" it comes back w/the same message a few seconds later.
Anybody run into this problem before or know how to fix it? And should I have run fixboot anyways just to be safe?
dazz.
