Not that you can't do it, but it's generally done wrong.
As someone who taught the Unix/C/First Stage Compilers class as a TA, I can safely say there's enough misinformation on the internet to hinder both the students and the teachers.
I didn't wait until university, and I'm not saying everyone should, but don't make the mistake of
not learning the fundamentals or why something works the way it does and jumping right into saying dumb crap like "I can program Visual C++" or "I'm a C++ expert" or "C++ is so much better than C" or ... well the list is endless. Just head over to gamedev.net's forums for plenty of examples.
