Installing a video driver ( bttv )

Ok, I've been making progress with my video surveylence project however I have never installed a driver on linux before.

I'm running debian sarge with the 2.4 kernel.

I have downloaded the bttv driver and the documentation says I need to define the kernel tree path in the make command. ( # make KDIR=/path/to/kernel/tree )

So where exactly is my kernel tree?

Also, once I get this installed, how do I tell my video device (/dev/video0) to use the bttv driver?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
