About the Right-click Context Menu

I find the right-click context menu totally indispensable, I make a lot of use of Send to, Move to, Copy to, Open with, Edit with, and so on, using HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in RegEdit. I have come across the four compliant keys (Root Star, Applications, Directories, and Folders) but there are a couple of things I find confusing and I'm wondering if anyone can elucidate on the functions of each of these four keys?
In particular, what's the difference between 'Directories' and 'Folders'? In Computerspeak a folder and a directory are meant to be the same thing aren't they??
