what does this background look like?
if you need a single background image, then you are probably better off making one at a 1600 resolution .. the part beyond 1024 would be best if you just made it something that is filler . ( like horizontal lines that can keep going on )
an image that big on your site is usually pretty poor web design as it make the client have to wait. this is of course if your image is large. sometimes you can get away with it if it is an image with a couple colors saved in a gif format.
